If you tutor students in the morning, it can be a challenging experience to keep them engaged and motivated especially if your sessions are right before the start of the regular school day. When you are doing early morning tutoring, it's important to remember that your students are sacrificing an hour of sleep and changing their morning routine to attend sessions. Here are some tips that can make those sessions go smoothly:
Be flexible with seating and materials: Allow students to sit in comfortable chairs or on the floor. Also, allow students to use fun pens and markers to help motivate them. Bring in manipulatives that spark student interests.
Allow time for personal connection conversations: If you are the first person that your student is interacting with outside of their home family, they will want to share personal stories and ask questions. Allow them that time because students perform better when they feel seen and heard. Also, taking time for them to express themselves can give them the space to clear their mind of any stress or excitement from their morning routine or the previous night.
Take Breaks: Remember, morning sessions usually require students to wake up early than they are accustomed to so allow for breaks as they get adjusted to their new schedule.
Reward their work: Students come to tutoring to improve so as they work hard to improve we can reward them.
